Brianna Kahane, one of OPRAH'S ALL-TIME WORLD'S MOST TALENTED & AMAZING KIDS

Nine-year-old violinist Brianna Kahane was chosen by Oprah Winfrey to perform in the widely-celebrated grand finale episode of Oprah'sALL-TIMEWORLD'S MOST TALENTED & AMAZING KIDS show to air in Oprah's final season.  The historic broadcast, which was taped in Chicago at Harpo Studios on February 23, 2011, and aired Tuesday, March 1, 2011, brought only five (5) children -- including Brianna --together following a worldwide search to showcase their incredible talents.  In the final edition of this widely-anticipated segment, which Oprah runs only once a year, Brianna performs a selection of the highly complex and virtuosic show-stopper, "Csárdás, by Vittorio Monti, on her mere ½-size violin.

Labeled a "prodigy" by The Washington Post, Oprah introduced Brianna by highlighting Brianna's recent performances for and compliments received from Former President Bill Clinton, and listed amongst Brianna's many exceptional accomplishments her unprecedented philanthropic efforts, which to date have helped raise over eighteen (18) million dollars through in-kind donations of her talent to more than twenty (20) notable charitable organizations over the past two (2) years alone.   Assisting Oprah with hosting duties was teen sensation and Platinum Recording Artist, 10-year-old Willow Smith, daughter of film stars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.  The program also featured a surprise appearance by rocker Lenny Kravitz.

In addition to appearing on this momentous final episode of Oprah's ALL-TIMEWORLD'S MOST TALENTED AND AMAZING KIDS, Brianna will also be featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network's (OWN) reality show, Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes, as The Oprah Winfrey Show draws to a close in its farewell season after 25 years on the air as one of the most well-respected programs in television history.

About Brianna Kahane
The past year has been very exciting for nine-year-old violinist Brianna Kahane.  Despite having played the violin for only five (5) years, her accomplishments in that short amount of time, and at such a young age, are breathtaking.  In addition to her performance this week on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Brianna has recently been profiled on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and was hailed by Grammy® award winner and hit songwriter David Foster as "one of the next big talents."

ELLEN CLIP:

CBS EVENING NEWS CLIP:

Brianna maintains an extensive repertoire of both classical and popular pieces, and is extremely passionate about using her talent to help others in any way she can.  Considered one of the world's youngest philanthropists, Brianna is trying to heal the world one song at a time.  To continue helping people with her music, Brianna has started her own foundation -- The Brianna Kahane Charitable Foundation -- of which she is very proud.

With her photographic memory, amazing ear, finger dexterity far beyond her years and perfect pitch, Brianna easily commits to memory and performs lengthy and complex violin pieces in a very short period of time.  Brianna produces beautiful tones delivered with meticulous intonation and an amazing sense of musicality, and she is a natural performer, bringing both passion and deep emotion to her music so it becomes vibrant and alive for her audiences.  Often bringing tears to people's eyes with her brilliant performances and extraordinary talent, audiences revel in sheer delight.  Brianna is a poised and talented violin soloist at just nine (9) years of age.

Daddy A Go Go - Music That Just Rocks

About Daddy A Go Go

Daddy A Go Go is the brainchild of John Boydston, who writes, records, plays and produces the music you hear on Daddy A Go Go CDs. Born in Oklahoma, he graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Masters in Journalism. John spent ten years working as a television news producer, making stops at CNN, WSVN, and WSB before leaving the news biz in the mid-’90s to become a stay-at-home dad, a transition that led directly to the Daddy A Go Go experience.

Daddy A Go Go grew out of the joys and tribulations of hands-on parenting and the realization that “KIDS LIKE TO ROCK.” Synthesized techno-schlock wasn't cutting it once Barney and Elmo had run their (very short) course in the Boydston house. So, with a guitar, three chords, one microphone, an old beat-up set of Slingerland drums, and a little multi-track recorder, the notion of family-friendly rock and roll, Daddy A Go Go-style, gradually began to take shape.

Boydston released his first Daddy A Go Go CD in 1998. Written and recorded entirely at home (between coaching and carpool driving), Cool Songs for Cool Kids made it to the 1999 Amazon.com “Top 10 Best Kids’ CDs of the Year” list. Boydston landed on Amazon’s “Best-of” list again in 2000 with his sophomore CD Monkey In the Middle, which also picked up his first Parents’ Choice® Award and got him a feature in Newsweek.

“Those three events in 2000 kind of put me on the map,” Boydston says, “and I started becoming aware of a groundswell of new indie-spirited children’s music.” That mean a lot more competition, but it also meant an enhanced awareness of the genre and more writers and publications willing to do a Daddy A Go Go story. On the whole, it was great.

Boydston kept the CDs coming. Big Rock Rooster came out in 2002, and Mojo A Go Go – Real Rock for Kids (2004) earned Boydston his second Parents’ Choice® Award. Eat Every Bean and Pea On Your Plate was released in 2006, and Rock of All Ages followed in 2008. All but one of these releases made Amazon.com’s “Best Kids’ CDs of the Year” list. “That was a huge boon,” Boydston adds, “because even in a slow year, being on the Amazon list really gets you out there and sells CDs.”

Not until he received an invitation to play the “Kidzapalooza” Family Stage at Lollopalooza in 2005, did Boydston realize he needed a live band.

Not knowing where to start, Boydston performed at Kidzapalooza solo. But when the SXSW Festival invited him to play in 2007, he says, “I looked around and realized I had my band right here in the house. My older son, Jake, was playing bass with some buddies in a band, and my younger boy, Max, was rapidly turning into a great little guitarist.” So together, as The Daddy A Go Go Band, they played at SXSW and Austin City Limits in 2007 and have been back to SXSW a few times since then. “We had incredible fun for a
few years performing live, traveling, sharing that experience, and playing Daddy A Go Go songs I’d written for and about the boys,” Boydston says, proudly.

Max and Jake still perform sometimes, but as Boydston says, not without irony, “that old band is growing up and moving on.” Jake is nineteen and a freshman at the University of Texas (perhaps those trips to SXSW had an influence?) and Max, sixteen, is in high school, busy with sports and his own bands. He’s quite the musician; according to Boydston, “you’ve gotta look up a YouTube video of him playing a Hendrix song at our first SXSW show when he was twelve.”

Hendrix at a family music show?

“Absolutely,” Boydston confirms, and he is adamant on this point, “with songs about carpools, cartoons, dirty diaper blues, and action figures wrapped around it, Hendrix fits right in with today’s modern family rock show, and that is the entire premise of Daddy A Go Go’s music right there in a nutshell.” That’s what it was, what it is, and with any luck, what it will continue to be for a very long time.

My Take on the CD's
My girls loved these albums! Seeing that we were able to listen to both Come on, Get Happy and Grandkid Rock, these albums were an amazing collection of synthesized rock. Both girls have had the music playing over and over over the past week and I think I now can sing along with the music and I know that they are as well. They bring them along with us as well in the car. There are many of the songs that will definitely stay with you all day if you hear it, so beware! The songs are catchy and with easy lyrics and good music, you cannot go wrong!

Book Review - Pixie & Trixie Bug

About the Book
In a magical, green garden down on Rollingbrook Way, twins, Pixie and Trixie Bug live with all their garden friends . . . Always wrapped up in adventures, along with the twins, is Lizzie, the Audrey Hepburn of Ladybugs, Catrina the Caterpillar, who is about to become a beautiful butterfly, Freddy the Frog and his pretty girlfriend, Lola, Delilah the Dragonfly, who soars through the garden now that she finally got her glasses from Doc Bum Bulbee, Gus the Grasshopper, who is known as General G for short, Daphne the Doodlebug, who doesn't like bright lights or loud noises, "Wheelie" the Walking Stick, who uses a wheelchair he named Flower Power to get around, Sidney the Slug, on his skateboard and Squirm the Worm Pardon, who is the twins oldest friend in all of the garden. With creative rhyming text and gorgeous, colorful illustrations, first in the series of books, Pixie and Trixie Bug shares that no matter who you are, how you are, what you look like, what you like to eat or do or wear, everyone is unique and special, just like me and you . . . Pixie and Trixie Bug, first in the series, celebrates "twinship", frienship, uniqueness and inclusion. And what all the friends in the garden knew what they counted on each day was the friendship they shared . . . Down on Rollingbrook Way.

My Take on the Book
Not being a twin myself, I have only looked on in awe of the special bond that twins can have between themselves (at least in looking from the outside in). This book captures this special bond and shares it with the readers young and old. I shared this with my girls and can to find that they simply enjoyed the book itself and the story that was shared. I particularly enjoyed the beautiful artwork within the book and found it to be a great addition to our growing library of childrens books.

In asking my oldest (6.5 year old) what she liked about the book, she said that she liked the twins but also story itself. As a parent, I found the book to be also quite diverse, showing the importance of inclusion and tolerance. I thought it was very nice that some of the characters in the book had special needs, which allow kids to see these types of characters in a different light and can shed some light on the special needs children that they will meet in school themselves.

I don't know whether this book will be a series, but all I can say is, I hope so! You will not be disappointed with this book!

Book Review: You Are a Gift to the World by Laura Duksta

About the BookLaura Duksta lost all of her hair at age eleven.  She was bullied, teased and humiliated throughout her teenage and college years. Even today, she remembers so clearly when someone at a party grabbed her wig and tossed it across a dance floor.

As a result, Laura became introverted and depressed, and tried to fill the void caused by feeling like a misfit in unhealthy ways. It wasn't until her thirtieth birthday, and after the idea for her first book, I Love You More, that she was finally able to accept herself, and her bald head.

The idea of I Love You More came to Laura after she saw her sister dealing with issues of being a young mother, and her nephew as a victim of those difficulties.  Laura self-published I Love You More and sold more than 50,000 copies.  Sourcebooks then released the book and it went on to become a New York Times bestseller.  Now, she is releasing a new book, You Are a Gift to the World (Sourcebooks Jabberwocky; April 19, 2011; $16.99; hardcover).

Laura has become a champion for our children, writing books like I Love You More and You Are a Gift to the World to spread a message of love, appreciation and acceptance. I Love You Morewas written for her nephew, so that he—and all children—might know that no matter what's going on in their lives or the world around them, they are loved. Only recently did Laura realize that writing I Love You More was also a healing experience for her.

You Are a Gift to the World has a powerful message for children and adults about appreciating one another and the world around us. It also continues to generate the conversation of love amongst people everywhere.

My Take on the BookThis ingenious book is an excellent springboard for parents and children to discuss what special gifts the child has and how everything in the world is a special gift to us..

The book is a flip book. It is two books in one. One book is on the front and as you read it , you finally get to a middle section which then allows you to flip the book over and read the second book.

Let's a begin with YOU ARE A GIFT TO THE WORLD

The first section is a delight. A father and his daughter are enjoying each other's company and the out doors. He tells her she is the best gift in the whole world. He proceeds to describe some of the reasons he tells her this: she is one of a kind, she sings sweetly, he loves to hear her laugh, her smile brightens his day,her hugs are the best.

The flip side: THE WORLD IS A GIFT TO YOU

So what is the greatest gift in the whole wide world? You only need to look at your surroundings to find some of the answers. So discuss what you see. Do you live in the mountains or by the seashore? Do you have trees in your yard which are homes to birds ?

Are you able to play in the water of an ocean, lake or river?

The story illustrates the miracle of life through baby birds and the seed that becomes a beautiful flower.
Our oceans are a gift supporting the lives of whales, fish, turtles, crabs, many plants, and more.
And don't forget the sun which sustains all life on Earth and produces amazing sunrises and sunsets.

It does not take much to look around and see the gifts the world gives each and everyone of us.

This book ends in the same center page as the first book did. There are two sentences as a closing. YOU ARE A GIFT TO THE WORLD AND THE WORLD IS A GIFT TO YOU. SO AS YOU TRAVEL THROUGH LIFE, YOU SEE ALL THE WAYS IT'S TRUE.

Do take the time to tell your child about their specialness and the gifts the world has for them.

Book Review: THE SUPER SPROWTZ: I AM BRIAN BROCCOLI AND I AM SUPER STRONG

Meet the Super Sprowtz! from Super Sprowtz on Vimeo.

Super Sprowtz gives moms an easy and effective way to teach their kids to enjoy eating vegetables.  Finally, there is a solution for the picky eater who won't eat broccoli or carrots or spinach -- Super Sprowtz!  And it doesn't involve hiding fresh veggies in other foods to trick kids into eating them.  I founded this company - with these fun and engaging veggie superhero characters - because I passionately believe moms need better tools to help their young children build honest and healthy relationships with healthy food.  My full bio is online, but a quick overview -- my background includes:  fitness instructor, organic restaurateur in New York City (I own 2 organic restaurants with my twin sister), film and TV producer for 10 years, and lifelong food enthusiast.

My Take on the Book
This delightful book introduces the reader to vegetables as the main characters. The first page of the book gives the reader a short file of information about Brian Broccoli and the mission he and his vegetable comrades must accomplish.. Brian Broccoli must stop Greasy Grease Cart from destroying the fresh fruits and vegetables at the farmers' market.

As the story progresses, you meet not only Brian Broccoli , but also Oliver Onion, Grete Garlic, and Colby Carrot. They are living on a rooftop greenhouse and have befriended a little girl named Rayne who takes care of the greenhouse and the plants who live there.
Colby Carrot spies the Greasy Grease Cart heading towards the farmers' market with the intent of destroying the vegetables and fruits .
The vegetable friends are mobilized and speed in Suzy Sweetpea's peapod-cycle to intercept and destroy the cart.

The story of course has a happy ending. Our authors are educating the readers into seeing that fresh fruits and vegetables are healthier eating alternatives to greasy foods.

The authors include information about the value of ten fruits and vegetables in the glossary and include a delicious vegetable side dish that you and your child can prepare together.

I can see a family enjoying the book and then purchasing various fruits and vegetables for tasting and cooking together.

You can make a difference in what your child eats and this book is a good beginning to a healthier YOU.

Buon Appetito!
